When the snow comes, it leaves a beautiful blanket of white across the ground. This magical sparkly stuff is fun to watch from inside with a cup of hot coco, but when you have to leave your home, that’s when things get a little more complicated. We’re sure you’ve heard it all before, but it never hurts to mention the following few reminders as we enter these snowy winter months:
- Be careful to avoid driving on black ice! Snow melts in the sun, and then freezes again in the dark, cold night. Drive slowly and pay attention to any dark spots on the road that look like puddles — they are more likely to be patches of slick black ice.
- Don’t forget to salt your driveway, front & back steps and sidewalks! Our mail carriers have a hard enough time trudging around in the snow and cold weather; you wouldn’t want them to slip and hurt themselves on your property. And of course that goes for family and friends as well!
- When you’re shoveling snow, lift with your legs–not your back! Snow may appear light and fluffy and fun to play in, but when you’re shoveling even a small area, it gets heavy quickly! Protect your spine and keep yourself out of the doctor’s office by using your legs to do that heavy lifting. Or, better yet, borrow your neighbor’s snow blower! Your homeowner’s insurance may even provide coverage for your neighbor’s equipment while in your possession … just in case!
